Procedure - Generator Shut Down

Section: Human Resource Procedure
Procedure Owner: Ignition633 Ministries Nigeria Human Resources
Procedure Name: Generator Shut Down Procedure
Origination Date: September 2024

Purpose
The Generator Shutdown Procedure aims to ensure the system's safe and efficient shutdown while minimizing potential damage and optimizing fuel usage. This procedure provides a structured approach for reducing load, switching power sources, and performing post-operation checks to maintain operational reliability and extend the generator's life.

Scope
This procedure applies to all personnel operating and managing the generator system. It includes steps for reducing load, changing power sources, turning off circuit breakers, cooling down the generator, performing post-operation checks, and managing fuel supply. The procedure covers both manual and automatic shutdown processes and is designed to ensure safety and efficiency during the shutdown process.

Shutdown Procedures
Reducing Load
Objective: To minimize generator load and energy consumption before shutdown.
Procedure
- Turn off or reduce the number of high-energy-consuming appliances, such as air conditioners.
- Turn off power in building areas that are not in use to decrease the load through the changeover process.

Changeover Procedures
Objective: To safely switch the power source from the generator to the main power supply (e.g., NEPA) or vice versa.
Procedure
Switching Power Sources
Turn the changeover switch to select the desired power source (NEPA or generator).
Turning Off Circuit Breakers
- When switching from the generator to NEPA, change to the available NEPA source before turning off the generator circuit breaker.
- If NEPA is unavailable, turn off the generator circuit breaker directly.

Cool-down Period
To ensure a proper cool-down period, allow the generator to run for at least 20 seconds after switching off the power source.

Turning Off the Generator
Objective: To shut down the generator system safely and effectively.
Procedure
To shut down the entire generator system, turn the ignition key from the "On" position to the "Off" position.

Post-Operation Checks
Objective: To ensure the generator is in good condition and ready for future use.
Procedure
- Check the engine oil level and top up if necessary.
- Check the diesel level and add fuel if needed.
- Inspect the generator for any signs of damage or issues, ensuring it is in good working condition.

Fuel Supply Management
Objective: To manage fuel consumption effectively and reduce waste.
Procedure
- Monitor the availability of NEPA power supply and switch over when it becomes available to minimize fuel consumption.
- Use load reduction strategies to aid in fuel management.
- Note that the manual start button and automatic module can start the generator immediately without the cooldown period.

Manual and Automatic Controls
Objective: To ensure the proper use of generator controls for starting and stopping the generator.
Procedure
Utilize both manual and automatic buttons, as well as the ignition key, to carry out on and off procedures as needed.
