Policy Owner: Ignition633 Ministries Nigeria Human Resources
Policy Name: Electrician Safety Policy
Origination Date: September 2024

Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety and well-being of all employees involved in electrical work by establishing clear guidelines and safety measures. It emphasizes the importance of proper training, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard identification, and adherence to electrical safety practices. The policy aims to prevent accidents, electrical hazards, and potential risks, ensuring a safe work environment for all personnel.

Scope
This policy applies to all employees and personnel engaged in electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance. It covers essential safety measures such as proper training and qualifications, the mandatory use of PPE, electrical hazard identification, the use of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs), electrical load management, regular inspections, and compliance with electrical codes and standards. The policy is designed to promote a culture of safety in all electrical work environments.

Policy Statement
Training and Qualifications
All personnel engaged in electrical work must undergo proper training and possess the necessary qualifications and experience to handle electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance safely.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Always wear the designated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when involved in electrical work. This includes:
- Insulated gloves
- Safety glasses with side shields
- Flame-resistant clothing
- Non-conductive footwear

Electrical Hazard Identification
All electrical systems and equipment must be properly labeled to indicate voltage, potential hazards, and the necessary precautions to observe.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)
GFCIs should be installed in areas with an increased risk of electric shock, such as near water sources. Employees must regularly inspect and test GFCIs to ensure their proper functioning.

Electrical Load and Overloading
Ensure circuits and equipment are not overloaded to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards.

Electrical Inspection
Regular inspection of electrical systems and equipment is mandatory to identify and address potential issues promptly. Your supervisor will schedule and conduct routine electrical inspections.

Proper Wiring and Electrical Connections
Electrical work should adhere to relevant electrical code regulations and best practices to ensure safe and secure wiring and connections. The use of extension cords for permanent installations is strictly prohibited.

Grounding and Bonding
All electrical systems must be properly grounded and bonded to prevent electric shock and reduce the risk of electrical fires.

Fire Safety
Adequate fire extinguishers should be available where electrical work is performed, and employees should be trained in their proper usage.

Proper Tools and Equipment
Only use the right equipment designed for electrical work to prevent accidents and damage to the equipment.

Reporting Unsafe Conditions
Report any unsafe electrical conditions or concerns to your supervisor immediately.

Work Area Safety
Ensure the work area is clean, organized, and free from hazards that could cause trips, falls, or other accidents.

  • Safety Signs and Barricades
Proper safety signs and barricades should alert people to potential electrical hazards and prevent unauthorized access to dangerous areas.
