Section: Human Resource Procedures
Procedure Owner: Ignition633 Ministries Nigeria Human Resources
Procedure Name: Sorting Clothes Procedure
Origination Date: October 2024
Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to provide clear guidelines for sorting laundry effectively based on color, fabric type, and washing requirements. This ensures that clothes are washed in a way that preserves their quality, prevents color bleeding, and avoids damage to delicate fabrics.
Scope
This procedure applies to anyone responsible for washing clothes and linens. It covers the process of sorting laundry into specific categories such as whites, lights, darks, delicates, hand-wash items, and towels/linens. The procedure also includes guidance on selecting the appropriate water temperature for each category and handling new or delicate items with special care.
Color
Whites: Gather all white-colored clothes, towels, and linens together in one pile. White garments are typically washed separately from colored items to prevent color transfer.
Lights: Group light-colored clothes, pastels, and light-colored linens in another pile. Light colored garments such as light gray are generally washed together.
Darks: Collect dark-colored clothes, such as blacks, blues, browns, and dark grays, in a separate pile. Dark colored garments including blacks, browns and deep blues are sorted together to avoid color fading or bleeding. They are washed with cold water to minimize color transfer.
Delicates: Set aside delicate or sensitive fabrics that require special care, such as lingerie, silk, or clothing with lace or embroidery. delicate fabrics, regardless of color, require extra care during the washing process. These items include silk, lace or sheer materials (chiffon, organza).
Hand-wash items: Identify items that are labeled as hand-wash only or require special attention and place them in a designated pile.
Towels and linens: Keep towels, bathrobes, bed linens, and kitchen linens in a separate pile, as they may be washed together based on their color.
Temperature
Linings, white clothes, or cloths that are heavily soiled should be washed in hot water. Delicates, bright color clothing, or any clothing marked with "cold was only," should be washed in cold water. Items like jeans and other general washing should be washed in warm/room temperature water.
Hand-wash
Delicate or hand-wash-only items, follow the care labels and wash them separately using the appropriate method.
New Clothes
If you have new clothes, especially those with intense or fading colors, consider washing them separately or with similar colors to prevent color transfer to other items.
