Purpose
The purpose of the Ironing Procedures for the Housekeeping Department is to establish standardized practices that ensure all linens, uniforms, and guest garments are impeccably pressed, enhancing guest satisfaction and maintaining high cleanliness standards.
Scope
This scope applies to all Housekeeping staff responsible for the care of textiles, covering linens, uniforms, and guest items. It includes guidelines on equipment usage, safety measures, techniques for different fabrics, and best practices for handling and storing items post-ironing, ensuring consistency and operational excellence.
Ironing Procedure
Make Room
Ensure that the ironing surface is clean and ready to use.
Fill with Water
If your iron has a steam function, fill the water reservoir according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the iron is unplugged and cool before filling it.
Preheat
Plug the iron and set it to the appropriate temperature based on the fabric type. Allow the iron to heat up for a few minutes until it reaches the desired temperature.
Sort Clothes
Fabrics are sorted based on the fabric type and the recommended ironing temperature. Start with garments that require the lowest heat setting and gradually work your way up.
Collar and Cuffs
Lay the garment flat on the ironing board. Begin with the collar and cuffs. Iron them on the inside first, then flip them over and iron the outside.
Sleeves
Lay one sleeve flat on the ironing board and iron from the shoulder seam down to the cuff, ensuring the fabric is smooth and wrinkle-free. Repeat for the other sleeve.
Body
Lay the body of the garment flat on the ironing board, ensuring there are no wrinkles. Iron one section at a time, moving the iron in smooth, straight motions. Be careful around buttons, zippers, and delicate embellishments.
Details
When ironing pleats or garments with intricate details, use a lower heat setting and be mindful of the fabric's texture to avoid damaging it.
Steam
For stubborn wrinkles, use your iron's steam function. Hold the iron a short distance from the fabric and press the steam button. Avoid direct contact with the fabric, especially delicate materials.
Hang/Fold Immediately
As you finish ironing each garment or section, they hang it or fold it neatly to prevent new wrinkles from forming.
Temperature
Adjust the iron temperature to avoid scorching or damaging the fabric when working with different fabric types or garments.
Clean Iron
Regularly clean your iron's soleplate to remove any built-up residue or stains. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintenance.
Storage
Once you have finished ironing, unplug the iron and allow it to cool down completely. Store it in a safe place.
