Policy Name: Housekeeping Safety Policy
Origination Date: September 2024
Purpose
This policy ensures all housekeeping staff's safety, accountability, and professionalism while performing their duties. It provides clear guidelines for restricted access, proper training, and safety protocols to minimize risks and maintain a safe working environment.
Scope
This policy applies to all personnel working within the housekeeping department. It details their access to certain areas, the use of equipment, safety measures for handling chemicals and heavy items, and general housekeeping procedures. All staff must comply with these guidelines to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
Policy Statement
Restricted Area
Only approved personnel should be in the housekeeping office, but those working in the housekeeping department are permitted to do so. Approval for entry must be obtained from Ignition Leadership (International Director, Campus Director, or Housekeeping Supervisor).
Training
Proper training and supervision are required for all machine and laundry operations! You will be trained on all equipment before use.
Caution
All machines, such as irons and steamers, stay off unless in use. Steamers and irons are very hot! USE WITH CARE AND CAUTION! Failure to follow proper safety measures could result in your termination for your safety and the safety of others.
Lights, Curtain, and Open Door
When cleaning personal bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, or other spaces, keep the door open, turn on lights, and open curtains. These steps serve many purposes:
- They create a well-lit working environment
- Help ventilate the room from chemical smells.
- Serves as a form of protection and accountability for you and residents.
Hazard
Floors should be clean and free of materials throughout the day to avoid tripping hazards. Quickly mop up any spills or wet spots to prevent slipping or falling.
Chemicals
Please be aware that some cleaning chemicals create harmful or potentially deadly gases when mixed (for example, bleach/hypo or ammonia). Some cleaning products can also be rough on your hands. Read the instructions and follow preventative safety measures such as wearing a mask or gloves while working.
Heavy Items
Your job may require you to pick up heavy items. For your protection, remember to follow regulations on how to do so.
Ladder
To clean high spaces, you'll need a ladder. For your protection, ensure to follow regulations on properly using a ladder.
