Procedure Name: Repair And Maintenance Procedure
Origination Date: September 2024
Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to establish a standard approach for addressing common repair and maintenance issues related to fixtures, furniture, and other items at Ignition633 Ministries Nigeria. This procedure is intended to ensure that minor repairs, such as those to curtain rods, doors, picture frames, and nightstands, are handled promptly and effectively, helping to maintain a safe, orderly, and functional environment.
Scope
This procedure applies to all carpenters involved in the repair and maintenance of items within Ignition633 Ministries Nigeria. It includes step-by-step guidelines for minor repairs, such as reattaching curtain rods, fixing door frames, repairing picture frames, and stabilizing nightstand structures.
Repair And Maintenance Procedure
Fallen Curtain Rods
Here are some possible common reasons why curtain rods fall:
- First, the wall surface is too hard. Curtain mounts are fixed on lintels, which are too complicated.
- Curtain rods were not adequately secured to the wall.
- Kids or pets pull the curtains, bringing them down.
Besides leaving annoying holes, falling curtains can damage walls to the point where it may be impossible to re-hang them in the same spot.
If the damage is not too severe, you might not have to patch the drywall. Instead, follow these simple steps to hang the curtains after they must have fallen out of the wall.
Get The Right Tools
You are going to need the following:
- Hammer
- Concrete nails
- Level gauge
Remove the Curtain Rod
Remove the rod from the brackets. Tap the brackets with a hammer on a flat surface to straighten them (if they are malleable, use a rubber mallet to prevent damage).
Attach The Curtain Mount
Position the bracket over the wall and use a pencil to indicate nailing points. Fix the bracket over the issues made and hit the nail to secure the bracket to the wall.
Repeat process
Use a level gauge to secure the opposite spot for the next bracket and repeat the same process.
Rehang The Curtains
Center the curtains on your curtain rod and place them on the brackets.
Doors
Steps Involved in Repairing a Cracked Door Frame :
- First, remove the metal door catch/strike and deadbolt catch/strike.
- Scrape any loose chunks of wood hanging off the door frame. (If you cannot fully close the door, continue to scrape off any wood, preventing you from being able to close it all the way.)
- After ensuring you can entirely shut the door, open the door to reveal the door frame. Apply wood glue or filler into the cracked part of the door, ensuring you apply enough glue to reach deep into the crack.
- Next, use wood clamps to squeeze the door together while the glue solidifies. Leave the clamps on for a few hours to ensure the glue sticks.
- Lastly, remove the clamps. You should not be able to see much of the crack anymore, but you may still need to sand and paint the door for aesthetic purposes.
- Reinstall the door catch/strike, and you are all done!
Picture Frames
Follow these step-by-step instructions to fix broken picture frames:
Gather Materials
For this project, you will need needle-nose pliers, a flat surface, wood putty, sandpaper, a small clamp, and wood glue.
Prepare The Frame
Lay the frame face-down on a flat surface and remove the back of the frame, the photo, and the glass (if any).
Pull Joints Apart
It is best to take the entire frame apart and repair all corners if one is broken. If you see nails or brads, gently remove them with the pliers and carefully pull the joints apart.
Sand the Joints
Once you have the frame pulled apart, use sandpaper to smooth the inner edge of each joint. Be sure to remove any lingering, stuck-on glue.
Fill Nail Holes
Use the wood putty to fill any old nail holes and let it dry completely. Then, sand down the surface until it is completely smooth.
Glue Back Together
Spread a thin line of wood glue on the inner edge of each joint and press the pieces together. Wipe any excess glue from the frame with a damp cloth and use a clamp to hold the joints together until the glue is dry.
Replace Artwork or Photo
After the glue has completely dried, replace the glass, the photo, and the back of the frame.
Nightstands
Nightstands are built using simple techniques to attach legs, braces, or shelves.
- Turn the nightstand upside down. Grasp the legs and wiggle them back and forth. Look for loose screws on the sides and tighten them with a drill/driver. If they are stripped, replace them.
