Purpose
To protect the health and well-being of children, staff, and families by preventing the spread of contagious illnesses. It provides clear guidelines for identifying, managing, and responding to illness in the care setting, ensuring timely communication, proper hygiene practices, and adherence to health regulations.

Scope
Includes steps for identifying symptoms, managing contagious diseases, and deciding when sick children or staff should stay home. It covers hygiene, cleaning, communication with parents, and reporting illnesses.

Definition
Illness: is a state of poor health caused by disease, infection, or a medical condition that affects the normal functioning of the body or mind.
Policy: is a set of principles, rules, or guidelines established by an organization, government, or institution to guide decisions and actions in specific situations.

Illness Policy
Hand Hygiene and Infection Control
- Handwashing
 
Caregivers and children will practice regular handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the restroom, before meals, and after coughing or sneezing.

- Respiratory Hygiene
Encourage children to cover their mouths and noses with tissues or elbows when coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues properly.

- Cleanliness and Hygiene
High-touch surfaces and toys will be regularly cleaned and disinfected to prevent the spread of illness.

Communication with Parents/Guardians

- Notification
 Parents or guardians will be informed promptly if their child has been exposed to a contagious illness within the childcare center.

- Return to Childcare
Parents or guardians should inform caregivers when their child is ready to return to the childcare center following an illness, ensuring the child is symptom-free and not contagious.

Emergency Response
Emergency Care
In the event of a medical emergency, caregivers will follow established emergency procedures, including contacting emergency services and notifying parents or guardians.

By adhering to this Illness and Health Policy, caregivers help maintain a safe and healthy environment for all children. This policy is subject to periodic review and updates, and all caregivers are expected to stay informed of any changes.
