Safe Sleep Practices
 
Purpose:
This procedure aims to establish and maintain safe sleep practices for infants in our creche. It is designed to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related fatalities. The purpose is to ensure all staff are adequately trained and consistently implement best practices for infant sleep safety. 

Scope:
This procedure applies to all staff members working in the creche who are responsible for the care of infants during sleep times. It covers all sleep periods. The scope includes the preparation of sleep environments, positioning of infants, monitoring practices, and staff training requirements related to safe sleep for all children in the creche. 

Procedure:

  1. Sleep Environment Preparation:
    - Use a firm, flat sleep surface covered by a fitted sheet.
    - Remove all soft objects, toys, and loose bedding from the sleeping area.
    - Ensure the sleep area is well-ventilated and at a comfortable temperature. 
     

  1. Infant Positioning:
    - Always place the child on their back for every sleep.
    - Once a child can roll over independently, allow them to assume their preferred position. 
     

  1. Monitoring:
    - Check on sleeping children regularly.
    - Use baby monitors if direct visual monitoring is not possible.

  1. Staff Training:
    - Provide initial and ongoing training on safe sleep practices.
    - Keep staff updated on the latest safe sleep recommendations.

  1. Parent Communication:
    - Inform parents about the creche's safe sleep policy.
    - Provide educational materials on safe sleep practices for home use. 

  1. Documentation:
    - Maintain records of sleep checks and any incidents.
    - Regularly review and update the safe sleep procedure.
