Policy Name: Caregiver Roles and Responsibilities
Origination Date: August 2024

Purpose
The purpose of an animal caregiver is to ensure the well-being, health, and happiness of animals by providing essential care, emotional support, and a safe environment, while advocating for their needs and fostering a compassionate bond between the animal and Humans on Campus

Scope
The scope of an animal caregiver covers providing daily care, including feeding, grooming, and medical attention, ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the animals' environment, offering emotional support and enrichment, and advocating for their well-being through rehabilitation and protection on Campus.

As a poultry caregiver, your responsibilities will involve taking care of the health, well-being, and overall management of poultry birds, such as chickens.

Feeding and watering
You will be responsible for providing proper nutrition and clean water to the poultry birds. This includes preparing and distributing their feed according to their dietary requirements and ensuring access to fresh water at all times.

Housing and shelter management
You will need to ensure that the poultry birds have suitable housing and shelter. This involves maintaining clean and well-ventilated coops or housing structures, providing adequate bedding or litter, and ensuring proper insulation and protection from harsh weather conditions.

Health monitoring
Regularly monitoring the health of the poultry birds is crucial. This includes observing their behavior, checking for signs of illness or injury, and promptly addressing any health concerns.

Disease prevention and biosecurity
Implementing disease prevention measures is essential to maintain a healthy flock. This involves practicing good biosecurity by keeping the poultry area clean, limiting access to visitors or other animals, and following proper hygiene protocols, such as disinfecting equipment and practicing quarantine procedures for new birds.

Breeding and incubation
If you are involved in breeding poultry, you may have additional responsibilities such as managing mating processes, collecting and storing fertile eggs, and operating incubators to hatch chicks.

Flock management and record keeping
Keeping track of important information about your poultry flock is crucial for effective management. This includes maintaining records of births, deaths, vaccinations, treatments, feed consumption, and other relevant data.

General care and handling
Poultry caregivers need to handle the birds gently and safely. This involves tasks like catching and handling birds for health checks, cleaning, or transportation. Providing enrichment activities and ensuring the overall welfare of the birds is also important.

Routine maintenance Regular maintenance tasks may include cleaning and disinfecting the poultry housing, repairing any structural issues, maintaining equipment, and ensuring proper waste management.

Continuous learning
This may involve attending workshops, reading industry publications, or seeking advice from experienced poultry professionals.
